Developer Diary #1: Starting an Indie Studio From Scratch

3D-rendered image of Cassandra Tremaine from I of the Storm. She stands confidently against a black gradient background, her head slightly tilted and a knowing expression in her green eyes. Her ash-brown hair is worn long and loosely styled, cascading over the shoulders of her light beige collared blouse. The lighting subtly highlights the left side of her face, hinting at a composed yet calculating demeanor.

Developer Diary #1

In this first developer diary, I share the story behind starting Chasing Windmills Games — the challenges, the creative freedom, and where we’re headed next with I of the Storm. Join me behind the scenes on this indie journey!

Launching an indie game studio is both thrilling and terrifying. As the game industry becomes increasingly competitive, standing out requires vision, grit, and a deep passion for gaming. In this first entry of our developer diary, we share the key steps—and lessons learned—on the journey from idea to indie studio launch.

Finding the Spark: Inspiration and Motivation

Every studio starts with a moment of inspiration. For us, it was the transformative experience of playing narrative-driven games like Dear Esther. That spark became a mission: to blend unique mechanics, stunning visuals, and compelling stories, creating memorable experiences for players.

Laying the Groundwork: Planning and Registration

Turning passion into a business means getting organized. Registering as an LLC gave us legitimacy and protection. We clarified our vision, defined our core values, and outlined initial projects. Early on, it’s crucial to focus on what makes your studio different—ours is a commitment to psychological thrillers and narrative depth.

Building the Team: Start Small, Dream Big

Most indie studios begin with just one or two people. We started as a duo: a founder with a background in retail, sales, and marketing, and a writer experienced in psychological thriller narratives. This lean approach keeps things agile and focused, letting us iterate quickly and stay true to our creative vision.

Learning as You Go: Tools and Skills

No one knows everything at the start. We’re still mastering Unreal Engine 5 and refining our storytelling process. The key is to embrace learning, stay adaptable, and not be afraid to seek help or feedback from the community.

Engaging the Community: Transparency and Feedback

Building an audience early helps shape the direction of your game. Sharing development updates, seeking feedback, and being honest about challenges fosters trust and excitement. We utilize blog posts, social media, and newsletters to keep players informed.

Final Thoughts and Next Steps

Starting an indie studio is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on your strengths, learn from every setback, and never lose sight of why you started. If you’re passionate about indie game development or psychological thrillers, follow our journey and join the conversation—your feedback could shape our next big idea.
